Call To Die

Then [Jesus] said to them all, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it. (Luke 9:23-24, HCSB)

Colbert and Gervais on Theism: Two Initial thoughts

Recently, I saw this six year old video of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Colbert discussing belief in God (or lack thereof).

Concerning this video, I had two initial thoughts:

1. Notice how quickly Gervais dismisses the question "Why does the universe exist?" substituting the question "How does the universe exist?" changing the focus from one of meaning to a mere mechanical account. Throughout history, philosophers have pondered the meaning of the universe. The assumption that Gervais brings to the table (shared by many today) is that the universe has no meaning. This assumption should be questioned, with the impossibility of consistently living according to this assumption pointed out.

2. Gervais uses the old atheistic talking point of saying, 'You deny a multitude of gods; I just deny one more god than you do.' This is equivocation. "God" can be used in general of an unseen higher power, but the attributes of YHWH, as presented in the Bible, are fundamentally different than the attributes of the gods in false religions. What a Christian denies when he or she denies the sexually immoral Zeus of Greek myths, the pantheistic Brahman of Hinduism, or the utterly mysterious 'God dynamic' of Scientology is in no way similar to what an atheist denies when he denies the true God, who is the Sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, the Holy Lawgiver and Judge over creation, and the Merciful Redeemer and Lord for all those who believe.
