Call To Die

Then [Jesus] said to them all, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it. (Luke 9:23-24, HCSB)

Free book from our friends at Triablogue:

Gene M. Bridges, who is on the blog team with me at Strange BaptistFire.com, also posts at Triablogue, which the Pyromaniacs have listed in their "stellar" category. This morning Gene sent me a link for a book written by another on the Triablogue team, Steve Hays. The title of this book, written in response to an anti-Christian work published by Prometheus Books, is This Joyful Eastertide: A Critical Review of "The Empty Tomb". In his book, Steve Hays responds to those who argue against the Resurrection on their own grounds, critically examining what atheists consider to be the best evidence against the Resurrection, but he also moves beyond the evidence to examine the assumptions that lie behind what atheist scholars tend to accept as evidence. In all, I think any of you reading this blog will benefit from This Joyful Eastertide, as it will better equip you to give a defense of your faith to unbelievers.

The One Book

A new tag thing is making its way through the blogosphere and I’ve been tagged by Gene Bridges, who blogs with me over at the Strange BaptistFire blog. So here goes:

1. One book that changed your life:
2. One book that you’ve read more than once:
3. One book you’d want on a desert island:
4. One book that made you laugh:
5. One book that made you cry:

I'm not trying to be "super-spiritual," but the answer to all the 5 above have to be "the Bible." I know of no other book that has changed my life, I have read it more than once, there is no book I'd rather have on a desert island, I laugh at some parts (perhaps inappropriately- for some reason, Joel 1:4 always strikes me as funny), and (though all too seldom) I have been moved to cry over my sin as exposed by God's living and active word.

6. One book that you wish had been written: How I Came to Finally Embrace Believer's Baptism and Changed My Views Concerning the Lord's Supper and Church Government by Martin Luther.
7. One book that you wish had never been written: The Qu'ran.
8. One book you’re currently reading: One Sacred Effort by Chad Brand and David E. Hankins.

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read: Holiness by J.C. Ryle.

10. Tag five others (I'm only tagging two): John Freiberg and Modern Day Magi.
